1. Act promptly. Many spills are easier to address when they are treated soon after they happen. Results can vary based on the type of spill, carpet fiber, carpet condition, and prior cleaning attempts.
2. Blot liquids with a dry, white, absorbent cloth or plain white paper towel.
3. Avoid scrubbing the area. Scrubbing can affect the carpet pile or spread the spot. Continue blotting with a dry cloth or paper towel. For semi-solid material, gently lift it with a rounded spoon. For dry solids, break them up carefully and vacuum the area.
4. Pretest any spot removal product in an inconspicuous area before use. Apply a small amount to the test area, then hold a white cloth on the damp area for several seconds. Check the carpet and cloth for color transfer, color change, or other visible effects before continuing.
5. Apply a small amount of the selected cleaning product to a plain white cloth and gently work on the spot.
6. Work from the edges of the spill toward the center to help limit spreading. Blot the area to absorb as much of the spill as possible. Repeat as needed.
7. Continue with the same cleaning product while the spill is transferring to the cloth. Additional products may not be needed if the first product is working.
8. Be patient. Some spots may require repeating the same step several times. If the spot remains or you are unsure how to proceed, contact a professional carpet cleaner.
9. Rinse the affected area with cold water, then blot with a dry cloth to help remove remaining cleaning product from the carpet.
10. Place a layer of white paper towels over the affected area and weigh it down with a flat, heavy object. Replace the paper towels as needed while the area dries.
