The Notorious Coffee Stain and How to Remove it
Coffee spills can happen in kitchens, living rooms, offices, and other carpeted areas. If coffee gets on your carpet, acting promptly and using a careful cleaning approach may help reduce visible spotting.
One Step at a Time
If you drink coffee regularly, you may eventually need to address a coffee spill on carpet. Before using any cleaning solution, check your carpet manufacturer’s care guidance and test the solution in a small, inconspicuous area.
- Start by blotting the liquid with plain white paper towels or a clean white cloth. If damp coffee grounds are on the carpet, gently scoop up what you can without rubbing them into the fibers.
- Mix two tablespoons of white vinegar with four cups of room-temperature water. Test the mixture in an inconspicuous area before applying it to the spot.
- Once the spot can no longer be blotted with paper towels alone, apply a small amount of the cleaning mixture to a clean towel or sponge. Keep the towel or sponge lightly damp rather than soaking wet.
- Gently blot the affected area. Avoid scrubbing, which can spread the spot or affect the carpet pile.
- Allow the area to dry, then vacuum the carpet. If the spot remains, consider contacting a professional carpet cleaner.
What to Do if the Spot Remains
Some coffee spots may be more difficult to address depending on the carpet fiber, the type of coffee, added cream or sugar, how long the spill has been present, and any prior cleaning attempts. If the spot remains after basic care, contact Allaire Chem-Dry to ask about professional carpet cleaning options.
